Ultrasound scanners are very specialised machines which bounce high-frequency sound waves off internal structures in the body, capture the returning echo, and generate an image using a powerful computer that builds a very detailed image of the internal structure of the part of the body being examined. The principle is similar to that used by a ship's sonar.
